The Tenchi Muyo! ConnectionTenchi Muyo! fans may be wondering, “who is Magical Girl Pretty Sammy and how is she connected to Sasami from the Tenchi Muyo! TV and video series?” Magical Project S is indeed a Tenchi Muyo! spin-off, but where did this whole Magical Girl Pretty Sammy thing begin?. 
The story all starts in 1993 the release in Japan of the CD Tenchi Muyo/Ryo-ohki CD Special 1 (The Birth of Heaven and Earth - The Time Travel). This CD contained a voice drama that involved the creation of parallel Tenchi Muyo! worlds by a malfunctioning device called the Dimension Controller; one of the worlds featured Sasami as a magical girl, Pretty Sammy. This story was later used in the Tenchi Universe series and can be seen on volume 4, but does not contain the version of Pretty Sammy seen in Magical Project S. 
The second appearance of Magical Girl Pretty was in another Japanese CD Release, Tenchi Muyo/Ryo-ohki's Christmas. The voice drama contained on this CD included some of the ideas that were later used in the animated versions of Pretty Sammy, such as Tsunami being the source of Pretty Sammy's powers. The first animated appearance of Magical Girl Pretty Sammy was in the Tenchi Muyo/Ryo-ohki Sound File Japanese release. The Sound File was a collection of Tenchi Muyo! music videos, mostly using footage from other Tenchi Muyo! animated releases, but containing some original animation. One of these was an original sequence involving Magical Girl Pretty Sammy battling evil space villain Kiyone and her henchmen. The Pretty Sammy sequence from the Sound File also appears as the ending sequence for the Mihoshi Special Galaxy Police Mihoshi's Space Adventure, which also contains the next appearance of Pretty Sammy, this time as a full-fledged character. In Mihoshi's tale about her past, Sasami plays an assistant detective to Mihoshi and Kiyone, who transforms into Pretty Sammy to save the day. Thanks to this OAV, Pretty Sammy became popular enough with fans to warrant her own show. 
Pretty Sammy finally took her place as the main star of her own Magical Girl Pretty Sammy OAV series. This series is where many of the Magical Project S characters first appeared, such as Misao/Pixy Misa, Ramia, and Rumiya. Also the first episode in particular provides some of the overall Juraihelm queen candidate plot concepts that were later used in Magical Project S. Thanks to the popularity of the Magical Girl Pretty Sammy OAV series, a TV series was finally created: Magical Project S! While Magical Project S borrows some ideas and characters from previous Magical Girl Pretty Sammy ideas, it is a self-contained universe. However, it is still a Tenchi Muyo! spin-off and as such, most of the main Tenchi Muyo! cast members show up from time to time, either as main characters or in cameo roles. Much like the Mihoshi Special, the Tenchi Muyo! cast play characters that are completely different from their Tenchi Muyo! roles.
